Auckland Zoo offers a number of options for a very creative and unique wedding reception.   I’ve been involved with ceremonies at the band rotunda, which have usually been followed by a reception down the path at the Old Elephant House.

Strangely when I mention this the Elephant House to people, a common response is Oh, doesn’t it smell?“.  The elephants moved out into a larger, more natural environment nearly 20 years ago.  The room has been extensively renovated within the last few years with new paint and lighting, and offers a great indoor/outdoor option with the private courtyard.

For weddings, the biggest challenge I’ve faced is the separating wall the cuts part of the room in half.  It’s solid concrete and probably holds the roof up.  At a wedding a few years ago, the bride and groom wanted to make a grand entrance.  The challenge – entering from any of the various doors would mean that at least half of the guests simply wouldn’t see them arrive.  With a little planning, we came up with a great way to make an entrance that was unique, memorable, and personal.  I’d love to discuss it with you sometime!

The band rotunda lawn is a great spot for a large marquee, and there are a number of areas around the zoo suitable for wedding receptions, a garden wedding ceremony, or corporate event.  I once worked with a couple who had their first dance on that band rotunda. I’ve even provided entertainment at a couple of elephant birthdays in this part of the zoo, too.
