How to hire a quality DJ

If you are looking for a reliable and quality wedding DJ in Auckland or the Waikato, here’s a few tips that will help you identify the hobbyist from the serious professional.

1.  Whenever possible, try to arrange a meeting with the DJ or DJ company.

Know who you’re working with.  The DJ will effectively be the stranger, the guest nobody knows at your party. Will they fit in?

2.  Check to see if the person you are dealing with will be the DJ that actually turns up at your event.

You could build raport with the person on the phone or whoever is responding to your emails, but some of the information or “vibe” may not get passed on to whoever the company calls in to do your event.

3.  Ask around, research any DJs you’re considering.

Ask brides, venues and staff, and anybody that has been to a party.  You’ll often get a more honest and detailed report about the DJ from guests at a party than you will from those who actually hired the DJ for that event.

4.  Think about what they’re charging.

If it seems like a bargain, you may get less than you bargained for.  While some Djs can treat your entertainment as a hobby and do a fine job at a low price, this is generally not the norm.  The lower the price, the better the odds of the DJ getting a better paying “gig” and cancelling yours, maybe with just a few days notice if any.

5.  Ask about their experience.

Have they done many events like yours?  Someone with a history of pubs and nightlubs may not know which songs your grandparents will enjoy at your wedding.  Perhaps they are just as comfortable at a 40th birthday as they are at a high school ball.  At the other end of the scale, if they’ve done a lot of weddings, are they flexible enough to do something different and be part of your wedding, different to any other they’ve seen?
