I did my first “disco” when I was 12 years old. Tape decks, home stereo, and my small rural school hall.

At 15 I started in part time radio at KCC FM in Whangarei, at 16 I was in nightclubs, and 18 I was full time on air, doing DJing on the weekends. I’d work a 7 to 12 shift Monday to Friday, then go to the nightclub to work til 3am wednesday to Friday. I had DJ events on Saturday nights, and I’d usually do a Saturday or Sunday breakfast show. All live back then – no pre-records, and often no sleep.

This year I turn 37. I’m no longer using tape decks, but I’m still DJing in the odd small rural school hall – and much bigger shows too. My biggest was part of the warm up for Simply Red here in Auckland in front of 10,000 for an outdoor concert. Not sure how I’ll top that, to be honest.

Just sharing my little milestone!
